Ala Wai Yacht Harbor

As you enter Waikiki on Ala Moana Blvd., you will see this boat harbor, which contains slips for privately operated vessels, and is also known as the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor.

Directions:
Driving from downtown Honolulu, take Ala Moana Boulevard toward Waikiki. Immediately after passing the Ala Moana Shopping Center, you will pass over the Ala Wai Canal bridge. As the road curves, take the second right turn (Hobron Lane), and you will pass under a pedestrian overpass connecting two buildings at the Ilikai Hotel. Turn left and find parking.

Parking: Municipal meter parking available on premises. Some free (non-metered) parking at the far end closest to the ocean. Some lots are permit-only, so read the signs.

Notes:

To reproduce Desmond's photograph, follow the surfers and walk toward the ocean. The closest part of the harbor to the ocean is approached by a walkway adjacent to the rocky shorebreak pictured on the right side of the panorama. Take the photo nearby the locked gate pictured on the left side of the panorama. Note that the twin buildings in the background of Desmond's photograph are those of the Hawaii Prince Hotel. Oceanview dining is available at several nearby restaurants including the Charthouse seafood chain. Large jellyfish and various tropical fish are frequent sights inside the harbor.
