Papa'iloa Beach -(Survivors' Camp)

This location, also known as Police Beach, is at the eastern end of what could be considered the Papa'iloa coastline. The opposite western end visible in the background of many Papa'iloa scenes, Pua'ena Point, is accessed by faraway Hale'iwa Beach Park. As of Summer 2008, the beach camp props are no longer present.

For scene matches other than the survivors' camp, see the Papa'iloa Beach (Miscellaneous).

"WARNING -- This site is on private property.

All beaches in Hawai'i are owned by the state and are public property. However private property is established at the natural vegetation line. A security detail employed by the producers of LOST is on watch near this location 24 hours a day. The security guards WILL ENFORCE the private property boundary. Notes

Address:

Directions:
Either coming from Hale'iwa Town or from the Joseph P. Lelong Bypass, continue NE on Kamehameha Hwy (83) towards Waimea.  The first marked, public street on the left, after Hale'iwa Town, is Papa'iloa Rd. Turn left onto Papa'iloa Rd and continue about halfway to the end of the road.  There is a dirt parking lot on the left (mauka) side of the road, park here -- it is public parking.  Enter the beach via a trail on the ocean side of the road that is marked with a sign reading "Public Right of Way To Beach." (Do not park and enter the beach at the end of Papa'iloa Rd., which is clearly marked by a No Trespassing sign).  Once on the beach, turn left and walk for approximately 200 yards to find the Survivors' Beach location which is ringed by ironwood trees. If you continue past here to the far end of the visible beach point, you are at Pua'ena Point.

Bus Directions:

You'll need to take a bus from Waikiki to the bus hub in Ala Moana Shopping Center. Then from there, to the beach camp.

In Waikiki (where you'll almost certainly be staying) there are basically two directions: toward Diamondhead Crater (East), or away from it (West). Take any Bus going away from Diamondhead Crater (West). Ask the driver as you get on if he is going to Ala Moana Center (most buses do go there).

In Ala Moana Center, there are two hubs. One is on the oceanside of the shopping center, and one opposite on the mountainside. You can go to either one.

Then look for signs boarding for the #52 bus. This will take you to the beach park in about an hour and a half.
(There's also a #55 that gets there by circling the scenic coast the long way from the east, but it'll take you two hours or more).

After you reach Haleiwa Beach Park, ask the driver about getting off at PAPAILOA road. It should be within a minute or two. If you reach "Pupukea Beach Park", you've gone much too far.

Then you walk down Papailoa road, then down the beach to the left as you're facing the ocean. Please see our Google maps link (see bottom of this sidebar) to orient yourself before you go. The Google maps pointer is on the actual beach camp, but you'll also see Papa'iloa Road show to its right.

As noted in the previous section, it's about 200 yds from the end of Papa'iloa Rd, and probably several hundred more from where the bus drops you off.

See also the bus schedule here. (On the bus schedule, read WESTBOUND routes only, which represent the #52). The very helpful TheBus informational phone number is: (808) 848-5555. The sole purpose of this phone number for tourists who want to know how to get from A to B on TheBus.)

NOTE:  This location may no longer be an active filming site at times, but (other than the beach itself) still remains private property.

Lost Virtual Tour

Quicktime VR panorama taken from the halfway point between the Papa'iloa Beach survivors' camp and Pua'ena Pt. This location is often seen in scenes from the survivors' camp as a small point that is visible between the foreground and Ka'ena Point in the background to the west.
Lost Virtual Tour

1) Travelling Kahuku-bound on Kamehameha Hwy through the Haleiwa bypass (skipping Haleiwa), here is the second and last (Kahuku-side) entrance to Haleiwa. One public access to Papa'iloa Beach is probably to turn left here and park at the nearest beach (Haleiwa Beach Park), and simply walk to your right if facing the ocean.

2) However, continuing straight leads to the main private access gate to Papa'iloa Beach.

3) Continuing straight past the entrance to Haleiwa.

4) within a short 1/4 mile is the entrance gate to the left

5) A closer view of the gate

6) This private access road is usually barred by a locked gate. This access road is through private property. Do not trespass! Please access the beach through the public beach access on Papa'iloa Rd (see right column)
