1) After parking as for the Manoa Falls Trail, follow the sign (right) into the valley towards Lyon Arboretum.

2) The road to Lyon Arboretum and the Manoa Falls trailhead. There is no parking along this road.

3) At the end of the road there is a hairpin. Do not turn left to enter Lyon Arboretum. Instead, turn right and walk toward the fenced entrance.

4) Continue straight to enter at the gated entrance to the trail. Do not continue on the paved road which hairpins left toward Lyon Arboretum. After you pass through the gate, look for a storage shed on your right.

5) After about a 1/8 mile you'll see a storage shed and another set of trailhead signs.

6) The banyan tree was found after departing the trail (before the second trailhead signs) at this location, and crossing a stream down below. Hiking off the trail is not recommended, and footing is treacherous, and is especially steep just as you leave the trail and walk down toward the stream.

7) The downhill slope leads to the stream visible below.

8) Continuing down to the stream

9) Continuing down to the stream

14) Continue downhill back to the left

15) Continue downhill back to the left

16) There it is.

17) You've arrived. The front of the tree facing you from this vantage point is where Charlie's scene was filmed. The tree is much larger than is apparent from these photographs!

This is a view from up on the main trail, looking down toward the stream. The numbered points above are marked.
