From Waikiki/Honolulu, take H1 east. The highway soon ends and turns into Kalaniana'ole Hwy. Continue straight, staying in the right lane as you pass Hawaii Kai Rd. Continue straight, passing Hanauma Bay, the Lana'i Lookout pullover, Koko Head, Sandy Beach, and the traffic light at Kealahou St. Soon afterwards, the road will curve left and you will see hills on both sides of the road. Park at the large paved parking lot on the right side for Ka Iwi Recreational area. After parking, follow the paved trail.
At first opportunity take the unpaved trail down towards the water. Follow for more than 1/2 mile until you reach the water. This area is located directly under the rock formation known as "Chair of Pele".
WARNING: STAY AWAY FROM THE EDGE...especially during high surf.
NOT SAFE TO SWIM.
To get to the cliffs, follow the Makapu'u Point Trail up until you see four cement markers on the right. Proceed 25 feet and enter to the right. Look for old chainlink fence posts. Follow to the edge of the cliff. BE CAREFUL. LOOSE ROCKS.
