Lost filming locations have started to pop up in the captions of ABC's "Enhanced" versions of the week before's Lost episodes that are aired as a rehash along with the current episode. I don't know if they are running out of things to comment on, or if it really helps the general viewer, but it sure is fun from our point of view to see Hawai'i's filming locations highlighted.
Some of the captions from
4x03 The Economist include:
1) "This scene was shot in Kualoa Ranch on the island of Oahu. Kualoa has been a location for many films including Jurassic Park and Pearl Harbor. "
2) "The 375 yard, par 4, 17th hole on the Fazio Course at Oahu's Turtle Bay Resort is doubling as a Seychelles golf paradise."
3) "Crushed ice and special FX turn Honolulu into snowy Berlin."
Also there were two captions related to locations in the enhanced version of
4x02 Confirmed Dead, including a fun fact:
4) "This scene was shot at a rock quarry in Hawaii."
5) "This looks like LA, but it's not all but 15 scenes in 77 episodes of LOST have been shot on the island of Oahu, Hawaii."
Some notes:
We're not avid golfers, but we believe the golf scene was on the
Arnold Palmer course at Turtle Bay Resort, and not the
Fazio course as the caption claims.
This video of the Palmer resort seems to match the episode exactly, and several LVT readers have also agreed with the ID as the Palmer, and not the Fazio, course.
The helicopter scene identified as "Kualoa Ranch" is more specifically in the
Hakipu'u Valley property of Kualoa Ranch, although most people associated the ranch with its other main property,
Ka'a'awa Valley (which contains among other places,
Hurley's golf course), often calling it informally "Kualoa Valley".
The snowy street is of course Merchant St. facing Ewa toward the intersection with Fort Street Mall, and yes, that is real ice, not fake snow. We'll have photos from the filming day at this street posted soon. And the quarry is Ma'ili Quarry on the west side of the island. We assume the caption writers asked the film crew for this bit of trivia!
And finally the fun fact: exactly 15 scenes were not filmed on O'ahu. We'll go back and try to count these scenes, but by our count there are five
locations that are
known to be off-island: 1) The airplane interior scenes were on a Hollywood soundstage, 2) a Season 1 underwater waterfall scene was in a swimming pool in Hawthorne, CA, 3) the polar bear cave was in a Big Island lava tube, 4) Marvin Candle's first orientation film was actually the LA soundstage for Alias, 5) Jack's almost-bridge-jumping scene was on a LA-area E. 6th St. bridge, and 6) Jack's post-bridge hospital scene with his ex-wife was the LA soundstage for Grey's Anatomy. That makes possibly 9 scenes we are missing, although several of these are probably airplane interior scenes: some from the Pilot, some from the Exodus flashbacks, and one from Jack's flashforward. However if you know of any off-O'ahu scenes we don't yet have listed, please let us know.
As you may have have noticed from the enhanced captions of the catchup broadcasts, the helicopter scenes were filmed at Kualoa Ranch. However it was not in the main Ka'a'awa Valley that most locals associate with the ranch and call "Kualoa Valley", and
